Where can I find the best deal on Purebred English Bulldog pups in Southern CA?

preferably AKC registered please, no lectures about bargaining for a pet or choosing the right breed. I've done my homework, I know that this is the breed I want. And I know what to look for in a bulldog... I simply don't want to get ripped off when buying one! thank you.

  1. A family member (ie pet) isn't something to bargin shop for! If you want a less expensive pet check with rescue organizations. And do your homework before you choose this breed as they have a lot of health concerns you should know about prior to ownership.
  2. You need to find reputable breeders and interview several of them. Check out Dogfancy magazine, there are lists of breeders in the mags and also on-line. DO NOT accept a pup from any breeder that will not allow you to see their kennel and meet the dam and sire if they own both dogs. Check the parent dog's temperment, check to see that the pups area is kept clean and neat... no bad odors, and check their breath. Ask about puppy socialization, how much they've been handled by adults and children. All puppies are cute, don't be swayed by that. Check potential pups bite (their teeth and how they come together), belly for hernias around the umbilicus and turn the pup over and gently rotate their back hips to see if there is a tendance to subluxate (dislocate). Ask breeders how much they sell their pups for and if they have a "no breeding clause" in their contracts. If there's a no breed clause, they might refund some of your purchase price if you're taking a female. Beware of the AKC... they're a money making organization and the money fills too few pockets. They allow pups with defects to be registered and also to breed. Registry with the AKC does not insure a sound pup. Take your time, a pup is a big investment of time, energy and love. Good luck!!
  3. The BEST deal is to go buy a pup from a reputable breeder regardless of price. http://thebca.org/breedref.html Bulldog club breeder referral section.
  4. This isnt a breed that you try to search for "the best deal" Searching for the cheapest is often the best way to get ripped off! Anyone selling cheaply is cutting costs and not taking proper steps to assure good health. These dogs are not cheap, you can expect to pay upwards of $2500 or so even for just a pet-quality. They have many health issues, so extensive testing on the parents is a MUST.. these dogs often do not mate naturally.. artificial insemination is costly, and does not always take.. so it can take several attempts to get a female pregnant. these dogs often also need cecarians.. another cost.. and compared to their size, they typically have relativly small litters. A breeder is also lucky to get 1-2 litters out of a female, despite all the costs to show and test her. The breed club will gladly refer you to a reputable breeder.. http://www.thebca.org/
