Bulldog Resources

Would an american bulldog pup be a good choice to raise to guard chickens?

We had a neighbor dog kill half my flock of chickens yesterday so we are looking into getting a dog to raise to protect them. I found an american bulldog pup but cant find any research on how they do with chickens. The regular breeds bred for chickens are pretty pricey and nobody within 1000 miles of me has any. Thanks!

  1. it should do fine as long as you raise him right my dad has 2 blue pitbulls with his game roosters
  2. No dog on the planet is "bred for chickens",dear. ANY sane & sound dawg, will alert to an intruder,of any species. ANY/every dog will gleefully KILL as many chickens as it can....unless CONFINED & *extremely* firmly trained *not* to....& that includes "it's" birds! Raising livestock requires proper CONTAINMENT...that includes dumb birds.
  3. American Bulldogs can do just about anything you want them to do. They can guard, catch, protect, provide companionship, and more. I would feel bad for whatever animal tried to attack those chickens.
  4. Guard chickens...eat chickens. i am sure he will love your chickens. just kidding...if you introduce him to them and he doesn't react aggressively or try to play with them in a way that would threaten the chicks then you should be fine. not to mention, if you get a bulldog he will definitely be able to take care of the neighbors dog. humble suggestions...be sure you ask the person you get him from if you can return him if he doesn't play well with chickens.
  5. Because the American Bulldog is a natural born guardian, with the right training the pup can protect anything you want. You will need to teach the pup what is right and what is wrong early in your relationship- otherwise, given the chance- it will most probably enjoy a nice chickeny lunch. Our american bulldogs (we have three as well as a staffy and bull terrier) were trained not to eat our goats, chickens, alpacas and baby calves. They have never, not once in their lives tried to hunt, eat or play with the other animals, due to our strict training. (we dont hurt the dogs either- if thats what people are thinking!) you'll need a check chain, TONS of patience and plenty of praise for your pup. Aside from your chickens, the a.b will guard you and your family with their life....
