American Bulldog?
I've been researching the American Bulldog breed and it seems like the breed has been getting pretty good reviews. Can anyone suggest anything about the breed, training, and temperment? I am also planning on taking training classes... whatever u can suggest!

- American bulldogs are the best. They are very loyal and loving. They have a lot of energy, so you need to be able to keep up with them. 'A tired bulldog is a good bulldog'
- MY BROTHER HAS ONE AND IT HAS ALOT OF MED. PROBLEMS AND ITS AKC SO I THINK IT IS COMMON IT THIS TYPE OF DOG BECAUSE OF THE SMUSHED NOSE IT CAUSES MED. PROBLEMS
- Ok, where do I start?? There are 2 different types of Am. Bulldogs- the standard and the Johnson type...you will have to decide which look you prefer...my boy here is a mixture of both. The Johnson looks more like a Pitbull while the standard has the appearance of a Lab. These guys do need extensive training in socialization and obedience starting at a very early age...they have a very high prey drive and can be dog aggressive if not properly socialized. Their temperment is awesome!!! They are excellent with children, they love them like they were his own. Very tolerant of small children and they actually know to play differently with a 3 year old than a 12 year old. They will give their life to defend their humans. They will get along with other dogs and cats if raised around them from an early age. You should really email me....I can go on and on about these dogs...I think they are so awesome and I truely love this dog wholeheartedly. You will not be disappointed. Please look into training....it's a must for this breed. Good luck and excellent choice!!!
- Accually well bred american bulldogs only have one major health issue, hip displysia. They are usually really healthy and live up to 15 years. Unfortunatly that is still no guarantee, sick dogs happen. They are wonderfully loyal dogs, smart but a little strong willed. Socialization is the key to these dogs, this is REALLY important. As soon as pup has his shots (3 months) get him into puppy kindergarten. You wont learn much training wise but he will get to play with lots of dogs and meet all kinds of people. They can be dog aggresive so this is important. Then you can move onto 'grade 1' and so on. On going training is important, take him for lots of walks, this does double duty, he gets the exercise the breed needs and further socialized. Very important is to have lots of people come to your house the first few months. Short, tall, big, thin, waring hats, carrying canes. They love their owners and will think nothing of protecting them, they need to know that people in the house are not allways a threat. There are four lines, meaning four studs that all dogs decended from. The most common being Johnson and Scott. The Johnson is popular right now it is 'bullier' Short punched in muzzle, wider head, and more muscular. The Scott is what the original bulldogs are believed to have looked like taller, leaner, longer muzzle (think Chance from the movie homeward bound ) Many dogs are a cross between the two. Lovely dogs if you are willing to invest the time. They are fantastic with kids. Absolutly beautiful, and full of bully love
- I have just bred american bulldogs myself. Someone here mentioned that johnson bulldogs look like large pitbulls which is completly wrong. There is scott pitbulls which are more athletic looking and not as wrinkly which would look like a larger version of a white pitbull slightly The johnson bulldog is a larger bulldog with a shorter nose and undershot jaw with massive structure and proper bulldog looks. Mine is a johnson and she is fantastic, She is very obedient and picks up on things very fast and learns things well. I am quite choosy with dogs and i dont like dogs that are stupid or dogs that will run away from you when they are off the lead, i dont like shy dogs or submissive dogs, i dont like small dogs or dogs that bark non stop so i am very picky but my american bulldog is fantastic.
- hmm theyre great! very loveable, loyal,SMART. we had our dog in training for 1-2 months and he came back a new dog..very obedient. temperment...relaxed and happy. nice and friendly...only one downfall..they dont know their own strength...they easily knock over things and shove around peoples feet..i can say this from experience. all around good doggy! =]
- I have two American Bulldogs. My female is a Scott and my male is a Johnson. Their appearance, energy level, and temperament are entirely different, which you will find is common as each individual dog is going to be different. The scott is smaller, sometimes better suited for in-home living as she doesn't knock things off the wall when she runs...lol. She is more energetic and tends to be a little more temperamental than the male. My Johnson is really laid back. Nothing gets to him, all he wants to do is be loved on and play. He's quite a bit larger (107 at almost 10 months) and doesn't always realize his size. The important thing is to observe the parents. It has amazed me how much my dogs have turned out like one or the other of their parents, even though they haven't been raised the same. You'll never regret an American Bulldog.
